Year 11 Art
Subject Description
Head of Faculty: Ms A. Bade.
Students who are interested in creative thinking and expression will enjoy this course. Students will record information from subject matter using a variety of different techniques and media.
Students will generate and develop their own ideas using artist models. They will be able to extend their ideas into other media (printmaking and painting) to produce new work.
This course is largely practical and thoroughly prepares students for a wide range of courses offered in Visual Art at Year 12.
Course Overview
The course is largely practical and allows students to develop their own style, creative imagination and problem-solving capabilities.
Theme: “Our New Zealand, My New Zealand”
Learning will include:
- Drawing in wet and dry media
- Printmaking (woodcut, monoprint and engraving)
- Painting conventions
Subject Overview
Term 1
Students will participate in the process of learning about different methods of creating imagery and mark-making in a range of both wet and dry media. This will include, but is not limited to, observation drawing based on still life, printmaking (woodcut, engraving and monoprint), mixed media and painting processes. Students will visually document their working process in a clear file and this work will form part of their assessment.
Term 2
In response to the chosen theme, students will continue to develop their painting and compositional skills in relation to selected New Zealand artist models, with an introduction to landscape and nature as subject matter. They will produce compositional sketches and planning and research pages to provide supporting evidence for finished paintings.
Term 3
All work to-date is submitted for assessment early in the Term.
Using prior learning, students will continue to investigate the theme with a shift to subject matter that is of personal significance (My New Zealand). Students will continue to create paintings in series to produce a body of work that develops individual style. They will continue to test and explore art making conventions and extend ideas relevant to selected artist models.
An A1, 2 panel portfolio will be collated from the year’s work ready for assessment early in Term 4
Term 4
Following the submission of the portfolio, students will be introduced to new artist models and subject matter in preparation for the creation of a large-scale painted sculpture. Students will learn about curating a show and be involved in the set-up of an on-site exhibition. Assessment will link to the development of ideas and the resolved exhibited work.
Prerequisites
Year 10 Visual Art course is an advantage; however, entry is open to all students.
