Year 11 Dance
Subject Description
Head of Faculty: Mrs N. Eichstaedt McComb.
This course is largely practical and collaborative. In Year 11 Dance, students will extend their learning from year 10, developing their understanding of how body awareness, space, time, energy, and relationships are considered to make dance works. Throughout the year, students will expand their personal movement range, learn how to apply safe dance practises in individual and group activities, as well as learning how to respond, reflect and interpret dance choreography.
Subject Overview
Term 1
Term 1 begins with an introduction to safe dance practises, warm up techniques, and New Zealand Contemporary Dance. Students will then learn two dance sequences which will be performed in front of a live audience. Students will learn the basics of performing for an audience such as timing, dynamics, spatial awareness, and performance skills.
Term 2
Term 2 focuses on choreography. Students will begin by exploring the fundamentals of New Zealand contemporary dance. They will then work in small groups to create choreography drawing inspiration from different including Whakatauki and Tūrangawaewae. Throughout the term, students will develop their understanding of the dance elements and choreographic devices to craft original dance pieces fostering confidence in their creative abilities and growing their artistic expression.
Term 3
In term 3, we explore various dance genres. Students will explore three distinct styles: Jazz, Contemporary, and Hip Hop. Classroom sessions will centre on mastering choreography, distinguishing the different elements between these styles, and honing stage performance techniques. Additionally, students will learn the history behind a new dance genre or cultural dance. This assessment will include researching into the history, technique, and performance of this style of dance, which they will then take and create a performance based on their learning.
Term 4
In Term 4, the emphasis shifts to the students’ exam. Students develop their skills in viewing and analysing a live dance performance. Through this exploration, students will gain an appreciation for dance performances, enhancing their ability to demonstrate an understanding of the artistry behind each movement. To end the term, students will participate in different styled workshops each lesson to give them a taste of a variety of different dance genres.
