Year 11 Design and Visual Communication

Subject Description

Head of Faculty: Mr G. Evans.

This course provides a progression from Year 10 Design and Visual Communication, with a focus on innovative product design and spatial design. A range of freehand, instrumental, and CAD techniques will be taught, enabling students to effectively communicate their design ideas using a variety of visual formats. This course is designed to help students explore their creativity and passion for three-dimensional design possibilities.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Visual Literacy
Develop skills in visual literacy including hand drawing, hand rendering, CAD, and model making. Students will demonstrate skills in fundamental visual communication techniques.

Term 2
Spatial Design
Design a form of shelter which will benefit people. Develop this spatial design in response to an influential Māori architect. Analyse the way this architect uses the principles and elements of design in their work and use this knowledge to inform own design ideas.

Students will demonstrate ability to explore and develop design ideas by applying visual communication and design techniques in response to a brief.

Term 3
Product Design
Develop a product design for a versatile table that will enhance people’s lives. The design will be influenced by an influential design movement.

Prerequisites

Year 10 Design and Visual Communication is an advantage, but not essential.

Assessment Information

A portfolio of the student’s design process for their spatial design and product design will be assessed.
