Year 11 Physical Education
Subject Description
Head of Faculty: Ms T. Price.
Students will participate in a wide range of fitness and sporting activities. There is a mixture of practical and theory periods. Students will demonstrate performance in sports of varying skills levels and against national standards. They measure their fitness and devise strategies and programmes for their overall well-being.
The course includes SUP trip, Snowplanet day, Action Matakana assault course and an orienteering or adventure type race in a team.
Subject Overview
Term 1
Who are we?
Activity based learning, Goal setting. SUP Trip.
Key learnings: What is Physical Education? Learning through the physical and being my best self in a group or when alone and under pressure to perform.
Assessment - 'Move to improve'. Using Touch Rugby and Tag football. We have a professional touch coach come into teach the skills and patterns of play. They are assessed in their ability to use these in a game situation.
Fitness testing at the end of the term and all students run the cross country as a baseline reference for their cardio-vascular fitness as well as to learn about bodies response to exercise.
Term 2
How do we work?
Assessments on the 'Science of Sport'. Basic Anatomy and Exercise physiology is learned. The bodies' responses to exercise in the short and long terms. How to improve these and why it would be beneficial to do so. Methods of training and basic Biomechanics is covered. Students are assessed on their ability to apply all this knowledge to a chosen skill. This is assessed in three parts; written response or topic test, then an action and self-analysis to improve the performance of a chosen skill and finally, a verbal response to also demonstrate their understanding.
At the end of the term, we visit Snowplanet. Another EOTC opportunity to relate back to in term 4.
Term 3
How do we improve?
Fitness testing returns. Writing a program so they can perform an obstacle course. Many training sessions in the build up to Action Matakana in week 6 then final fitness tests and reflections needed on the term and activities. The students will mainly focus on their physical wellbeing but also need to understand the importance of feedback and reviewing goals when writing up final report.
Term 4
Who am I?
Sociology of sport. Aotearoa adolescents, and why they do not remain active after they leave school. What determines whether they remind in sport and why? Who is influencing these choices and what strategies can we come up with offset the drop out rate? Students will look at the impact of social ,media, peers, whanau as well as other influences in NZ society.
Research and case studies using sport NZ information such as 'Balance is better' is done.
In groups, students will create and deliver activities they would make the ideal senior Physical Education subject in schools. Gola being to encourage school leavers to remain active.
Prerequisites
A good level of general fitness and some ability in a variety of sport is encouraged, but not a necessity.
All senior Physical Education students at Baradene compete at Swimming sports, Athletics day and in the cross-county run.
Contributions and Equipment/Stationery
Students do not need Baradene PE Gear for practical lessons so can wear their own training gear.
Workbooks are digital/online and at no extra cost.
Having a sound pair of running shoes is advisable.
