Year 13 Drama (Level 3)

Subject Description

Head of Faculty: Mrs N. Eichstaedt McComb.

In Level 3 Drama, students research, analyse and critically evaluate how drama interprets, records or challenges social and cultural discourse. Students will be part of a performance, script an original drama, direct a one act play, and view and analyse live theatre. Students will be expected to rehearse, perform, and show understanding of works from a variety of theatre practitioners and forms. Level 3 Drama students work both individually and collaboratively to produce original work throughout the year.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Students will research theatre practitioners and select one to form the base of their Term 1 practical work. The class will read a selection of plays and monologues, critically reviewing playwright and character intentions with each work. Students will individually select a monologue to research and analyse, to prepare for performance assessment. They will select and integrate drama techniques (voice, body, movement and space) to bring their selected work to life.

Term 2
After analysing a selection of plays, students will select an engaging topic and script their own one act drama. Students will learn scripting conventions and how to craft effective dialogue. The process includes regular revision and editing of the script, as well as standing up sections of the script to test performance suitability.

Term 3
This term involves students working individually or with a partner in a directing role. Students select a play that they will research and critically analyse, identifying key aspects of the text and forming a director’s concept for production. Students then translate the script from ‘page to stage’ by casting actors, leading rehearsals (including technical and dress rehearsals) and performing the final work for an audience.

Term 4
Students prepare for the external examination that requires making insightful connections between drama components in a live drama performance viewed within the calendar year, the director and/or designer’s concept, and the wider context. This is a written examination.

Prerequisites

Preference will be given to students who took Level 2 Drama and students who have had experience in Drama outside the classroom setting.

. If choosing this subject without having completed Year 12 Drama please have a discussion with the Teacher in Charge.
