Year 13 Design and Visual Communication (Level 3)

Subject Description

Students will choose either product design or spatial design as their main project for the year 13 Design and Visual Communication course. This project can be extended for those students who choose to work towards Scholarship.

This course requires students to generate innovative design ideas from a starting experience of their choice and evolve these ideas towards a design solution. Students will demonstrate skills in complex visual communication techniques to communicate the intent and details of design ideas.

The design process incorporates human factors and environmental considerations, relating to the broader needs of our society, the global society and future generations.

 

Subject Overview

Term 1
Students will visually explore a starting experience of their choice. They will generate ideas as the starting point for their product design or spatial design project. The product design will be a lighting solution for a retreat venue. The spatial design will be a retreat venue.

Term 2
Students will evolve their design project towards a design solution. They will use a variety of complex visual communication techniques to communicate the intent of their design outcome and how people interact with it.

Term 3
Students will choose to either develop a sophisticated presentation to exhibit their design to an audience or to demonstrate how their conceptual design can be regarded as fit for purpose in the broadest sense.

Prerequisites

Level 2 Design and Visual Communication is essential. 

Note: Students must have achieved a grade of Merit in either product design or spatial design in the 12DVC course, permission from Head of Faculty.

Level 2 Painting is an advantage. Level 2 Design is an advantage.

 

Pathway

Level 3 Design and Visual Communication Achievement Standards are accredited as a recognised University Entrance subject. Learning for senior students opens tertiary education pathways that can lead to design-related careers such as architecture, spatial design, interior design, product design.

Assessment Information

Students will submit a portfolio of their design process for assessment.
Students may extend their design work and submit their portfolio for Scholarship.
