Year 13 Painting (Level 3)
Subject Description
Head of Faculty: Ms A. Bade.
Students who have a passion for experimenting with a range of paint media will enjoy this practical and hands on course. They will have the opportunity to problem solve, expanding their 'thinking' to develop their skills and explore associated ideas and techniques of practicing artists, while exploring their selected theme for the year.
Students will produce a body of work that demonstrates knowledge of established painting practice.
This course will also prepare students for tertiary applications.
Students are only able to select TWO Visual Art subjects at Level 3 (this does not include History of Art).
Students identify and develop a personal style as they explore a theme and artist models of interest through drawing and painting.
Learning will include:
- Drawing in wet and dry media
- Painting conventions
- Established practice investigation
Subject Overview
Term 1
Students explore their chosen theme through visual research, source material, and the experimental use of a range of different media and associated painting techniques. Students will work sequentially to generate drawings and resolved paintings, relevant to established art practice. The practical nature of this subject gives students the opportunity to experiment with concepts and use their creative imagination and problem-solving skills.
Term 2
Students continue to systematically generate and regenerate ideas by investigating and applying the ideas of their selected artist models. Individual media exploration and technical skill development is encouraged and supported. This term will culminate in the final preparations for an internal assessment due at the beginning of Term 3.
Term 3
The internal is submitted early in the Term.
Students continue to systematically produce a body of work from their internal submission as they produce paintings for their external portfolio. The 3 panel folio must demonstrate the generation, synthesis and development of in-depth ideas across the 3 panels. Work will be selected from the internal to form part of the external submission.
Term 4
Students will resolve all work and submit their portfolio for external assessment. The work must show evidence of ability to fluently control a range of appropriate media in the generation, regeneration and synthesis of ideas using established painting conventions.
Prerequisites
Preference will be given to students who have achieved 12 credits in NCEA Level 2 Painting.
Discretionary entry will be offered by the Head of Faculty.
