Year 11 Health Education
Subject Description
Head of Faculty: Ms T. Price.
Student study the key Health Education concepts, of Hauora, Attitudes and Values, Socio-ecological perspective and Health Promotion.
Health models through the potential topics of Relationships, Mental Health, Decision making and Resilience.
Subject Overview
Term 1
The underlying concepts of health. In depth coverage of the key concepts or cornerstones for all senior health and towards scholarship and tertiary learning.
Hauora - the four dimensions and how they inter-relate.
Attitudes and Values.
Socio-Ecological perspective and Health promotion.
We also begin our full year course on Improving an inter-personal relationship to enhance our Hauora.
Students keep a log, track their relationship and how actions enhance it and their own wellbeing.
Term 2
Health Models of NZ and Pacifica. Relation these models of health to the various communities in Aotearoa, NZ.
Using the knowledge of these Health models we learn about Decision Making.
Designer drugs, alcohol and vaping are reviewed from the course in year 9 and 10 and further depth of understanding is gained.
Term 3
Resilience and how we manage change. Identifying key times of change and stress and our responses to these and how we cope.
What risk and protective factors make us more likely to cope in the face of adversity. Identifying strategies to enhance Hauora.
Term 4
Health Promotion. Group work to enhance an aspect of our school community. We focus on the wellbeing of the Year 7 & Year 8 students at Baradene. Enhancing relationships and the mental health of students who may be feeling less included or unsure of their place at school as yet.
There is end of year exam based on this, as well as our assessment on Improving an inter-personal relationship to enhance our Hauora.
Pathway
Students who take Year 11 Health Studies may have an interest in tertiary studies towards: Medicine, Nursing, Social work Nutritionist/Food Science, Health promotion, Counselling and Mental Health, Physiotherapy, Bachelor of Health Science (majoring in Nutrition) Exercise and Health Science and more.
