Year 13 Dance (Level 3)
Subject Description
Head of Faculty: Mrs N. Eichstaedt McComb.
This course is largely practical and involves both group and individual work. In Level 3 Dance, students will advance and refine their skills in a range of dance styles. They will explore the world of dance and challenge their understanding of the role of dance in society. Students will choreograph a dance that they teach and rehearse with a group of peers. Students will have the opportunity to watch, appreciate and evaluate a variety of dance, using critical thinking to analyse dance performances and their aspects.
Subject Overview
Term 1
Term 1 begins learning the fundamentals of dance practice – conditioning, technique basics and collaborative work. The core focus this term is learning a group dance taught by a guest tutor. The style is generally a contemporary/jazz fusion (subject to change) and requires technical skill and communication of dance form. Students will practice group dance protocols and how to contribute effectively to achieve unity and precision in a dance work. This is performed for an invited audience.
Term 2
Students will refine and practice choreographic processes and devices in a range of choreography workshops. They will then work individually to choreograph a group dance which they will teach and rehearse with dancers. The stimulus changes each year. These choreographies are performed in the auditorium and students are assessed on how their movement has been selected, developed and structured to resolve ideas.
Term 3
The focus in Term 3 is on dance performance. Students will learn 3 dances of the contrasting styles for their repertoire i.e. Jazz dance, hip hop and contemporary. These will be taught to students with specific emphasise on technique and performance protocols. Students are assessed across the repertoire. Students will also begin their analysis of a live dance performance and prepare for the external in Term 4.
Term 4
Students prepare for the external examination that requires making insightful connections between dance aspects in a live dance performance viewed. This is an essay based examination.
