Year 11 Music

Subject Description

Head of Faculty: Mrs N. Eichstaedt McComb.

This course is designed to enhance students' practical, theoretical, and creative skills in music. Students will advance their abilities in composition, performance (both solo and group), music theory/analysis, and music history. This course fosters public performance confidence, creative expression through composition, and analytical skills through score reading and music theory. Aural skills will be honed by listening to various music styles.

Performance

Over the course of the year, students will perform two contrasting pieces of music on their chosen instrument as a featured soloist before an audience and one piece of music as part of a group. The performances will demonstrate evidence of technique, accuracy, musicianship and presentation skills.

  • Solo Performance (1):  - One piece or movement
  • Solo Performance (2): - One contrasting piece or movement
  • Group Performance:  - One piece or movement

Composition

Over the course of the year, students will compose two short pieces of music based on composition tasks. The nature of these compositions will be outlined in the assessment task sheet.

  • Composition 1: Melody and accompaniment
  • Composition 2: Collaborative Song Writing

Score Reading and Musical Knowledge

Students will engage with a wide range of scores from various cultures and musical periods. During the Term 4 examination, students will compare different music styles, focusing on World Music, Māori, and Pasifika. Understanding of music in historical contexts will also be assessed.

Aural Skills

While there is no formal assessment for aural skills, these will be developed during class through listening and analysing various compositions, enhancing glossary terms and analytical skills.

Prerequisites

  1. Practical Experience: Students are generally expected to have at least two years of tuition on a musical instrument or voice, equivalent to achieving Grade 2 or 3 in practical music exams (e.g., ABRSM, Trinity College London, or similar).
  2. Basic Theoretical Knowledge: Students should have a basic understanding of music theory, usually equivalent to Grade 2 or 3 Theory. This ensures that they have the foundational skills to engage with music theory and analysis at Level 1.
  3. Participation in Music Groups: Active participation in school music groups, such as bands, orchestras, or choirs, is often encouraged. This helps students develop ensemble performance skills and experience collaborative music-making.
  4. Interest and Commitment: Students should demonstrate a genuine interest in music and a commitment to practicing and improving their skills. This can be assessed through previous involvement in music-related activities and teacher recommendations.
  5. Teacher Recommendation: Entry into the course may also depend on the recommendation of the music teacher or Head of Music, based on the student's previous performance and enthusiasm for the subject.
  6. Discretionary Entry: discretionary entry may be possible for students who have not completed all the formal prerequisites but show potential and enthusiasm for learning music. This decision is made by the Head of Music.

These prerequisites ensure that students are adequately prepared for the demands of Year 11 Music, which involves developing practical performance skills, engaging in composition, and learning music theory and history.
