Year 9 Dance and Drama

This half-year course is largely practical and collaborative. In Year 9 Dance and Drama, students will increase their confidence and build practical skills necessary for performing for an audience. Students will explore drama and dance elements, techniques and conventions, and have the opportunity to use these in performance. Life skills such as speaking in front of an audience, working as a team, being creative and using quick thinking skills will be enhanced throughout the classes. There are two assessments: students will perform a scene from a script and choreograph and perform a group dance.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Term 1 or 3 (timetable depending)
The focus in Term 1 is the acting component of the course. Students will work on the drama techniques of voice, body, movement and space, and how these can be used to create believable characters. Students will work on character development, vocal technique, and using drama conventions. The class will read plays to understand script work. The main focus is a scripted performance, where students will select a scene/extract from a short play that they will learn and rehearse. This will be performed for an audience and students will show their characterisation and confidence in performance.

Term 2
Term 2 or 4 (timetable depending)
The focus in Term 2 is the dance component of the course. Students will learn the dance elements and how they can sequence movement using the choreographic devices. They will be challenged to think creatively about creating and expressing ideas through movement. The first section will look at a variety of stimulus for creating dance with different dance elements as the focus. Students will build on their skills to create an original dance in a small group based on ‘Fire and Ice’. The final project is a musical theatre unit where students combine their learning in drama and dance to create an original musical theatre scene.
