Year 11 General Science

Subject Description

Head of Faculty: Mrs S. Boasman.

Year 11 Science

The Year 11 General Science course is compulsory in Year 11 at Baradene College.

Students may then choose the Year 11 Additional Science course as an optional subject.

The Year 11 Additional Science course is highly recommended for students who have a strong interest in the sciences and are considering taking two or more sciences in Year 12. It is taken in addition to Year 11 General Science and it provides the opportunity for students to gain a wider and deeper foundational knowledge and skill set in all three specialist areas of the Sciences.

This dual pathway is strongly advised for those students who wish to do Chemistry and/or Physics at Year 12.

Year 11 General Science

This course consists of six modules:

  • Two modules of Biology
  • Two modules of Chemistry
  • Two modules of Physics

The totality of all these constitutes General Science (otherwise known as single science) and will provide students with the foundational knowledge required for Level 2

In the Biology aspect of the course students will study aspects of genetics, patterns of inheritance, tracking of genes and microbes in the environment.

In the Chemistry modules the students will study atomic structure and formation of ions, acids and bases, chemical reactions, and rates of reaction.

In the Physics modules the students will study aspects of mechanics including motion and forces.

Assessment:

50% will be based on school examinations (mid-year and end of year).

50% will be continual assessment (end of module assessments, research tasks and investigations).
