Year 10 Dance
Subject Description
Head of Faculty: Mrs N. Eichstaedt McComb.
This course is largely practical and collaborative. In Year 10 Dance, students will learn and create dance in response to a range of stimuli to communicate ideas. Students will learn to think critically to explore and analyse their work and the work of others. Students will engage in assessments and activities focused on how dance is used to entertain, heal, and educate in society. Students will participate in a range of activities to develop their ability to use dance elements of body, space, time, energy, and relationships.
Subject Overview
Term 1
Term 1 focuses on choreography. Students will begin by exploring the fundamentals of New Zealand contemporary dance. They will then work in small groups to create choreography drawing inspiration from Kowhaiwhai patterns. Throughout the term, students will develop their creative skills and utilise stimuli to craft original dance pieces. Emphasis will be placed on understanding dance elements, exploring choreographic devices, and fostering confidence in their creative abilities. By the end of the term, students will have gained a deeper appreciation for New Zealand contemporary dance, with the end product being choreographic works that reflect their growing confidence and artistic expression.
Term 2
In term 2, we focus on various dance genres. Students will explore three distinct styles: Jazz, Contemporary, and Hip Hop. Classroom sessions will centre on developing choreography, distinguishing the different elements between these styles, and honing stage performance techniques. Additionally, students research into the history of dance through Neil Ieremia and the New Zealand dance ensemble, Black Grace. Through this exploration, students will gain an appreciation for dance performances, enhancing their ability to demonstrate an understanding of the artistry behind each movement.
Term 3
In term 3, the emphasis shifts to exploring global dance genres. Students will collaborate in groups to select a dance style, delving into its origins, evolution, and key movements. Following thorough research, they will share their findings with the class and lead a mini lesson, teaching a small choreography piece in their chosen style. This immersive approach not only broadens their cultural understanding but also cultivates their presentation and teaching skills within the realm of dance.
Term 4
In term 4, students have the opportunity to create their own solo dance pieces, drawing upon inspiration from stimuli given in class. Students will take the learning they have done throughout the year, building on their learning to create a final performance. Throughout this process, students will peer assess and give feedback on each other’s performance.
Prerequisites
Year 9 Dance is an advantage, but not a prerequisite. If choosing this subject without having completed Year 9 Dance please have a discussion with the Teacher in Charge Dance or Head of Department.
