Year 12 Design and Visual Communication (Level 2)

Subject Description

Head of Faculty: Mr G. Evans.

This course builds on the foundation that was formed in Year 11 Design and Visual Communication. Students will develop advanced visual communication skills enabling them to communicate detailed visual information.

At Level 2, students will generate and evolve design ideas, demonstrating use of specialist spatial or product design knowledge in response to a brief context. They will use drawing and rendering techniques to generate divergent design possibilities and communicate design details. Students will use a range of hand drawing and CAD techniques to visually communicate design ideas.

Students will show understanding that design does not develop in a vacuum but is affected by the circumstances of the society in which it exists and serves.

Subject Overview

Term 1
Design era or design movement
Students will analyse a design era or design movement of their choice, focussing on the aesthetic characteristics, function, and social influences of the time. They will generate design ideas for an innovative Airbnb holiday space, integrating the characteristics of their chosen design era or design movement.

Term 2
Spatial Design
Students will continue to follow a spatial design process to develop their design ideas that were generated in Term 1, exploring functional and aesthetic aspects to move the design forward. They will develop visual literacy techniques, using a range of methods to effectively communicate their design ideas.

Term 3
Product Design
Students will follow a product design process to create a conceptual exterior seating solution or other exterior product for their spatial design context.
