Year 10 Business Studies
Subject Description
Head of Faculty: Mrs D. Kiely.
This course introduces students to key financial literacy required in today’s society. Concepts such as budgeting, saving, investing for retirement, debt and financial planning will be explored to make them confident in using money wisely. It also offers an introduction to the NCEA subjects of Economics and Accounting. Students will learn the key concepts of each course that are required for further study at a senior level and will be given an opportunity to plan and run a small business activity.
Subject Overview
Term 1
Decision Making (written assignment)
• Students learn how to utilise a decision-making model in order to make informed decisions, taking into account their values.
Accounting (test at the end of the unit)
• Understand and analyse transactions which businesses face.
• Prepare income statements and statements of financial position by identifying income, expenses, assets and liabilities that businesses have.
Term 2
Economics (test at the end of the unit)
• Students learn about the economic problem and how scarcity results in choices with an opportunity cost.
• Understand the circular flow model and how households and producers rely on each other.
• Study how markets work by learning about demand, supply and ultimately how prices and quantities are determined.
Financial Literacy (quizzes throughout the unit)
• Understand the function of bank accounts and interest rates.
• Understand how debit and credit cards work.
• Students will learn how to prepare a CV.
• Understand the financial responsibilities and consequences of a student loan.
• Review a payslip to understand income-related calculations.
• Understand the function of Kiwisaver and assess various investment strategies.
• Understand how renting and owning a property works.
Term 3
Financial Literacy (quizzes throughout the unit)
• Learn the different facets of a budget, including income, expenditure, surpluses and deficits.
• Understand the function of insurance.
Enterprise (group project)
• Students develop their own product and business plan. This will include the development of personal skills around enterprise, financial literacy, teamwork, promotion and communication.
Term 4
Enterprise (group project)
• Students will prepare and sell their product in a school market environment.
Financial Literacy (quizzes throughout this topic)
• Learn about the stock exchange and how investment decisions could be made.
